Azerbaijan’s men’s boxing team has set a new national record for the number of medals won at a single European Championships, achieving the milestone in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

Saidjamshid Jafarov (75 kg) secured the team’s fifth medal by reaching the semi-finals, marking a historic first for Azerbaijan. Previously, the team’s best result at a single edition of the championships was four medals, achieved in Plovdiv in 2006 and again seven years later in Minsk. Securing five medals in Sofia sets a new national record at the European Championships.

Before Jafarov secured his medal, Subhan Mamedov (50 kg) and Nabi Isgandarov (70 kg) had reached the finals, while Amin Mammadzade (55 kg) had advanced to the semi-finals. Mahammad Abdullayev (+90 kg) had already claimed bronze.

The championships will conclude on September 25.
