1924 — ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AZERBAIJAN BOXING FEDERATION

In 1924, the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation was founded, marking the beginning of the official development of boxing in the country. At that time, amateur boxing in Baku had already begun to take shape. The creation of the Federation gave a strong impetus to the organization of the sport and created favorable conditions for hosting competitions.

This date is considered one of the most important milestones in the history of Azerbaijani boxing, laying the foundation for future successes.

 

1926 - FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

In 1926, the first Azerbaijan Boxing Championship was held, marking a new stage in the national boxing history. The competition demonstrated the emergence of strong local boxers and became a tangible result of the Federation’s work. It further defined the direction of boxing development in the country and increased interest in competitions nationwide.

That same year, Azerbaijan’s top boxers competed in the Transcaucasian Championship and emerged victorious, proving their high level of preparation.

 

1929 — AZERBAIJAN–TURKEY INTERNATIONAL MATCH

In 1929, an international boxing match between Azerbaijan and Turkey was held. This encounter became one of the first experiences for Azerbaijani boxers competing against foreign opponents. The event played an important role in expanding the international connections of national boxing. At that time, organizing such competitions was considered a major event. This match symbolized Azerbaijani boxing’s transition from a regional level to the international stage. The year 1929 remains a significant international milestone in the history of boxing in the country.

 

1936 — FIRST USSR MASTER OF SPORT

In 1936, Abbas Aghalarov became the first Azerbaijani boxer to be awarded the title of Master of Sport of the USSR. This achievement was considered historic for national boxing and demonstrated the rising professional level of Azerbaijani athletes. His name became an inspiration for future generations.

1972 — ABBAS AGHALAROV INTERNATIONAL MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

Starting from 1972, an international boxing tournament dedicated to the memory of Abbas Aghalarov has been held. The tournament has played an important role in preserving boxing traditions in Azerbaijan. It attracted both local and international athletes, increasing the country’s visibility in the global sports arena.

 

1992 – THE FEDERATION’S FIRST PRESIDENT IN THE YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

Azerbaijani boxers won their first medals

Aghajan Abiyev, who had headed the boxing division of the Azerbaijan Sports Committee since 1984, became the first president of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation following the country’s independence. During his tenure, Azerbaijani boxers won their first European, World, and Olympic medals across all age categories. Aghajan Abiyev served as President of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation until 2009.

1992 — INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP AND FIRST MAJOR SUCCESS

In 1992, the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation became a full member of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and the European Amateur Boxing Association. This marked its official integration into the international boxing community.

 

That same year, Adalat Mammadov won a gold medal at the European Junior Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland. This achievement became one of the first major successes of Azerbaijani boxing in the independence era and significantly boosted interest in the sport nationwide.

 

The year 1992 stands out as a milestone both organizationally and competitively.

1999 — FIRST EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN BAKU

In 1999, Azerbaijan hosted the European Junior Boxing Championship in Baku for the first time. This event demonstrated the country’s capability to host major international tournaments.

 

The national team won 4 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals, finishing second overall after Russia. This result highlighted Azerbaijan’s strong position in European boxing and remains a significant moment in the country’s sporting history.

 

2000 — FIRST OLYMPIC MEDAL

At the 2000 Summer Olympics, Vugar Alakbarov won a bronze medal, becoming the first Azerbaijani boxer to achieve an Olympic medal.

 

This success marked the beginning of a new era in national boxing history and demonstrated the competitiveness of Azerbaijani athletes on the global stage. It also served as strong motivation for future generations.

 

The year 2000 holds a special place in Azerbaijan’s Olympic boxing history.

 

2003 — HISTORIC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDAL

At the World Championship held in Bangkok in 2003, Azerbaijani boxing achieved a historic milestone. Agasi Mammadov won the gold medal in the 54 kg category, defeating all his opponents. This was the first gold medal in the history of Azerbaijani boxing at World Championships.

 

Additionally, Tofiq Ahmadov and Ruslan Khairov secured bronze medals. The national team ranked among the top five, strengthening Azerbaijan’s recognition on the global boxing stage.

 

2011 – THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN BAKU FOR THE FIRST TIME

A historic World Championship in Azerbaijan and the road to the London Olympics

One of the greatest achievements of Azerbaijani boxing in recent years was being entrusted with hosting the AIBA World Boxing Championships for elite athletes in Baku. Held in 2011, the tournament also served as a qualification event for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. In addition, the championship set a participation record, bringing together 685 boxers from 127 countries. Azerbaijani boxers won 1 gold and 1 silver medal at the World Championship.

2025 — MEMBERSHIP IN WORLD BOXING AND EUROPEAN BOXING

In 2025, the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation joined World Boxing and formalized its full membership within European Boxing.

 

This step marked a new phase in the Federation’s international presence, enabling more active representation of Azerbaijani boxing in the global sports arena. It also strengthened international relations and opened new competitive opportunities for athletes.

 

The year 2025 is remembered as a significant international turning point in the history of Azerbaijani boxing.

 

2025 — HISTORIC GOLD MEDAL IN DUBAI

In December 2025, at the World Championship held in Dubai, Azerbaijani boxer Subhan Mammadov delivered an outstanding performance. On his path to the final, he defeated opponents from the Philippines, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia.

 

In the decisive bout, Mammadov triumphed over Russian representative Edmond Khudoyan, who was 10 years his senior. This victory earned him the gold medal at the World Championship.

 

With this achievement, Subhan Mammadov became the youngest world champion in the history of Azerbaijani boxing. His success made 2025 one of the most memorable years for Azerbaijani boxing.

 

HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT AT THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

2 records set in Sofia

Azerbaijan’s men’s boxing team has set new national records for both the total number of medals and the overall medal tally at the European Championships in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

Previously, our boxers had won a maximum of four medals at a single edition of the championships. This time, they secured five. Azerbaijan also improved on its previous best tally of two gold and one bronze, winning two gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Sofia. For the first time, the team finished second in the men’s team standings.
